Backdrafting Water Heater Replaced With a Power-Vent — Southampton, PA
Call came in as "no hot water," but the real problem was the vent. The furnace had been replaced years earlier and left the water heater orphaned on an oversized chimney.
What we found
- •Rusted draft hood and a scorched vent connector — classic backdraft signature
- •Original atmospheric 40 gallon tank, rating plate dated 13 years back
- •Heavy sediment floor; the tank rumbled hard the moment it fired
- •Weeping T&P valve on a closed system with no expansion tank
What we did
- ✓Drained and removed the old tank the same day; it left on our truck
- ✓Installed a sealed 50 gallon power-vent unit with PVC venting to the sidewall
- ✓Added an expansion tank sized to incoming pressure and a proper gas sediment trap
- ✓Fired, purged, leak-checked every joint and verified outlet temperature
Hot water back the same afternoon, and the combustion-air problem that would have killed the next tank early is gone with it.
